Playstation 2 (PS2) Reviews

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World`s End
When you boot this game up you’re expecting some swashbuckling action; impromptu moments of adventure, shock and intrigue; or at least something that is half-way decent. While Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 was a movie tie-in that failed miserably, it at least had some very, very nice web-slinging action. However, shoddy sword fights, a confusing story and repetitive gameplay not only makes Pirates 3 an awful game, but it might make you hate the franchise.

The story is supposed to cover the likes of both Pirates of the ...

Spider-Man 3
Movie-to-game licenses have flooded the industry year on end for as long as it was marketable for the original license holders and game publishers. Sadly, profit margins have always won out over quality, and Spider-Man 3 for the PlayStation 2 is just another casualty of good marketing for a mediocre movie and an awful game.

The game starts players as the normal red and blue Spidey, with Bruce Campbell providing a narrative tutorial for about the first half-hour of gameplay. He guides gamers through the basics of fighting, web-slinging and ...

God of War 2
Few games actually deliver on the promises they make. Few games find a way to fix near-perfect game mechanics. Few games deliver a narrative which keeps gamers hooked. And no other game allows gamers to rip Medusa’s head clean off her shoulders, impale a Minotaur straight in the throat, or cut the wings clean off a Gryphon. God of War 2 does all these things and more. Should gamers buy God of War 2? Hell yes.

God of War 2 is the rare game which actually lives up ...

The Shield: The Game
Vic Mackey is one of television’s most dominating cops, hands down. His tactics are always questionable, and the results aren’t always in the best interest of all parties. Nevertheless, Vic and his Strike Team [usually] pull through whatever vices have a grip on them. Only this time, Vic and his squad couldn’t muster through the 15 missions and 33 interactive scenarios to save this game from an early grave to the bargain bin.

The story in the game follows the latter season’s exploits, after Vic and the ...

SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals: Combined Assault
Socom has managed to establish itself as a formidable franchise for Sony Computer Entertainment. Zipper Interactive's exclusive military-shooter has come a long way since it originally debuted on the market back in 2002. Interestingly, the multiplayer component has grown very deep and very large (supporting up to 32 players). As for the single-player campaign, it’s a standard stop-the-terrorists storyline with a couple of high-points and some noteworthy flaws.

First off, I’ll mention that the multiplayer portion of the game is the more favored feature in Combined Assault. Gamers ...

Reservoir Dogs
Eidos has taken some interesting risks this year, and I can’t help but admit that some of their investments have paid off. While Just Cause, by Avalanche Studios, received a mixed bag of reviews, I'm tempted to think Reservoir Dogs might fare in the same results. The ideas, however, that accompany the movie-to-game Reservoir Dogs, bring some very high replay values to the overall gameplay concept. In one case the game, like the movie, is short, has snappy dialogue, takes round-about ways to get to the point, and is ...

Guitar Hero II
Guitar Hero is, no doubt, one of the best musical games every created and one of the top overall games on the PlayStation 2. Its concept is taken from the popular Dance Dance Revolution games, but instead of jumping around like you have ants in your pants; you’re rocking out on a plastic guitar.

If you aren’t familiar with the game, you basically have to match up notes that are scrolling up on the screen with one or a few of the buttons on the guitar controller. The ...

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
I have to ease the minds of those who didn’t play either of the X-Men Legends games: “You’ll be OK. Just don’t miss Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.” The main reason you shouldn’t feel guilty lies in the fact that the third installment is much more fulfilling in regard to characters, which ultimately fleshes out an even broader storyline, and some significant gameplay enhancements. Ultimate Alliance also assists folks not familiar with the Marvel universe by providing background on some of the best superheroes and villains to ever be created.

Final Fantasy XII
How long has it been since we heard the Final Fantasy prelude? How long has it been since we casted fire magic or talked to a Moogle? Too long...far too long. Thankfully, Final Fantasy XII makes up for this incredibly long wait and does so in spades. But don’t think that is the traditional Final Fantasy formula we have all grown to love. While there are a number of similarities in FFXII, the number of differences far out-weigh them. Is this a bad thing? Depends, but I’m sure the ...

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
As the final Mortal Kombat game for the Xbox and Playstation 2, I can’t help but admit some measure of grave disappointment. Right off the bat, the game is missing tag options, tournament, and survival modes. Instead, for the basic fighting options there’s just Arcade, Versus and Practice. That’s it. Nothing more. Outside of the basic fighting, there’s some redeemably good stuff going on for MKA. Like the Motor Kombat, Konquest mode (save its lacking coop mode) and the Create-A-Kombatant feature.

Mortal Kombat, first of all, is ...
