Guitar Hero is, no doubt, one of the best musical games every created and one of the top overall games on the PlayStation 2. Its concept is taken from the popular Dance Dance Revolution games, but instead of jumping around like you have ants in your pants; you’re rocking out on a plastic guitar.

If you aren’t familiar with the game, you basically have to match up notes that are scrolling up on the screen with one or a few of the buttons on the guitar controller. The notes on the screen obviously go along with the song and it feels like you are playing a real guitar, even though it is a fake plastic guitar with five big fret buttons and a strum bar. Guitar Hero was a new concept and it took some time to catch on, but by the time Guitar Hero II was ready there was a huge fan base waiting to get their hands on the new game.

Guitar Hero II is loaded with new content, but sticks to the same gameplay formula that everybody fell in love with. There are over 60 new tracks, new characters, new venues, new multiplayer modes, new ways to practice songs, better stats, and of course we can’t forget about the new rad black and red guitar controller.

The best thing about Guitar Hero II is that it is friendly to both newcomers and those who have already mastered the game. If you are used to playing on expert, you can start right out on this level and don’t have to bore yourself playing songs on easy. If you are a complete noob and don’t have a clue what you are doing, the easy songs are very easy and there is also a tutorial that you can play through if you really have no clue what you are doing. So whether you are an extreme guitarist, the average Joe, or slow Moe, you are going to have a fun time with the songs that aren’t too hard or too easy.

On top of that, there is now a new practice mode that allows you to try specific sections of a song at specific speeds. Now, if you are having trouble with a certain part of a song, you can practice this certain section over and over and master it. This is extremely useful and makes mastering a song much easier. Once you pass the song there is also much more stats that show how many notes you hit as well as how you did in specific sections of the song.

The biggest difference that you will notice while playing through the songs are that they are generally much longer. It also seems that Harmonix tweaked some settings so that it is slightly harder to fail a song. On the first Guitar Hero songs, it was very easy to mess up a little and the song immediately comes to an end. In this second game, it seems to be more forgiving and it is much easier to recover if you aren’t doing so well. Another big difference is that there are now not only double notes…but triple notes! Not only that, but the three notes are not always right next to each other. These definitely take getting used to and will probably hurt your hand at first, so watch out!
