Much like a great invention, Star Wars doesn’t fade out; it just gets improved over the years. Whether it is trading cards, video games, conventions, novelty items, pet costumes, or even LEGO building sets, we will probably never see the end of Star Wars. Let’s face it; Star Wars is an iconic experience for every generation. With the LEGO Star Wars video games, children get a particularly rewarding experience. But the fact of the matter is that LEGO Star Wars II also appeals to every generation—kids and adults alike will love this game.

LEGO Star Wars II takes a critically-acclaimed formula and does a bit more with it. You could say that this should’ve been the original but hey, sequels are hard enough to pull off correctly so we should all be happy. However, this isn’t a true sequel as it doesn’t take place directly after events from the first one; they’d be writing an all-new story if they did that! What they did do, though, is re-create the events from each of the original Star Wars movies, except all the characters and machinery are LEGO, obviously. LEGO Star Wars II is a longer game as well, clocking in over 20 hours, and that’s excluding all the level replays for secret items and extra content for “full” game completion.

Since this title closely follows the original Star Wars trilogy, the game’s story is known worldwide. You start the game in Mos Eisly Cantina, which is the hub area of the game. From Mos Eisly Cantina you can enter a succession of doors that represents each key event of the movie trilogy. So the first event of Story Mode will obviously be Princess Leia’s courageous efforts to evade the Empire, shuttling C-3PO and R2-D2 off with her holographic plea for help.

There are plenty of areas throughout the game that can’t be accessed your first run through Story Mode. Sometimes you’ll need a character you haven’t unlocked yet to get to other areas. For this, Free Mode is available for each level, which is the only way to get all 99 Gold Blocks, 100% game completion, and some other replay value-minded niceties that Lucas Arts threw in.
