The gameplay of NASCAR 07 is pretty standard for the NASCAR series that EA has made popular. Gamers can choose from a variety of racing modes from the first menu screen they run into, and from there the possibilities are quite gracious. Those who want to jump right into a race without having to deal with the "other stuff" of a career mode can easily get behind the wheel of their favorite car and blast down the straight-aways of every popular NASCAR racing venue known to man by selecting “Race Now”. Gamers wanting a more realistic approach to the NASCAR experience can enter Season Mode and once again deal with all the ins and outs of racing in NASCAR, both on and off the track. In Season Mode gamers can tweak their car's performance and stats to their heart's content. Gear heads will love the options available to them, whether it is adjusting tire pressure or adding a little extra juice to the engine's output. For those who want to see how their tweaking worked without being behind the wheel, the option to simulate the season or races is possible, but not nearly as fun.
Fight to the Top also returns with all the various cars to race, and still gives some of the more rewarding experiences within NASCAR 07 because here is where the various NASCAR stocks are available to race. A nice new addition to the gameplay of NASCAR 07 is the fact that EA finally got smart and decided to not make all the drivers basically perform the same way while they are racing. Some drivers are obviously going to have situations where they excel, whether it is passing, drafting, collision prevention and so on. A nice touch to the game, you can perform a maneuver that is special to a particular driver and accumulate points which can be used to improve your overall driving abilities. It will be black and white when comparing the same racer from the beginning of a season to the end of a season. This makes the driving in NASCAR 07 a little more strategic (like it is in real life, despite many who think otherwise). Each driver has strengths and weaknesses and gamers are going to have to tailor their driving style and their strategies accordingly. On paper this is known as the Variable Driver Attribute System, and can not only lead to more points to spend on the drivers but, in some situations, lead to abundant bundles of cash if players wager and win correctly (gotta work the system right?).
NASCAR 07 handles fine, but those who aren't used to a NASCAR game are going to be severely surprised. These aren't Corvettes or Ferraris people, and as such, they handle completely different. They aren't meant to take tight turns or to perform crazy zig-zags across the track. Get too careless and these cars will go out of control in a hurry. At first it is a little humbling. One would think that once they have mastered games like PGR2 or Need for Speed Underground that any racing game would be a cake walk. Not so with NASCAR 07. This is a whole new ball game.
