EA seems to have this thing with releasing “new” games without there being much new and exciting. If it isn’t NCAA 07 or Madden 07 suffering from this fate it is some of EA’s other sports titles. The latest in this trend is NASCAR 07. NASCAR 07 will appeal to those who like arcade-like racing with a dose of simulation.

Now it’s not that NASCAR 07 is horrible game. In terms of a racing game (especially one that is meant to appeal to the NASCAR fans), NASCAR 07 does a fairly good job of recreating the sensation of racing. There are just numerous areas for improvement. Releasing sequels that don’t make the franchise jump leaps and bounds is a trend EA has made popular and one that should be put to rest.

Graphically NASCAR 07 is a big let down. Sure NASCAR 07 for the PS2 is technically last generation's hardware, but even for the PS2 there are parts of NASCAR 07 that are U-G-L-Y. One of the worst was during the cinematic when pulling into Pit Road. A close up of the car and tires reveals actual pixels. I don't know about you, but in this day and age, having blocky, pixelated graphics which remind of the PSOne's capabilities doesn't make for a very rewarding experience. In addition to this, the cars and environments just look dated and blurry. Yes I am racing in a NASCAR game so it is believable that much of what a gamer will see will be blurry, but not to the point where it is annoying. It just doesn't feel like a whole lot of effort was put into the graphics department. There are plenty of other games out there for the PS2 (even those made by EA, no less), which don't have any of the graphics problems like NASCAR 07. I will give props to EA, though, for including some impressive blur effects during the races. Sure it is hard to see just how impressive these blurs are when compared to the rest of the graphic package, but there is still a little graphic goodness within NASCAR 07.
