Pirates of the Caribbean has quickly become one of Hollywood's greatest blockbusters, not to mention one of Disney's biggest movies. So it would only continue the “wonderful” trend if the movie was iterated into a game, right? Shipping at about the same time as the second movie released, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow puts you in the swashbuckling boots of the infamous Jack Sparrow and his new adventuring friends, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. Bethesda and Seven Studios really had their hands full in trying to turn this franchise into a worthwhile action fighting game. For the most part, it isn't bad; it's just not any different from the plethora of other action fighting games out there... unless you're an extremely hard core Pirates fan.
The story and characters are, arguably, the most enjoyable part of the game. The biggest piece of the pie that stands out: the voice overs. Thankfully, the best character in game sports his respective voice work. You can hear ol' (Captain!) Jack Sparrow tell his tales of how the events of the first movie (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) actually happened. Yes, the sly and loveable pirate weaves the tale by his own accounting and you're along for the ride. Of course, the tale wouldn't be complete unless Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan were there right? Unfortunately, neither of the actors lent their voices to the game, just Johnny Depp.
This proves interesting and refreshing -- there are new twists and enemies that the scallywag Captain Sparrow spews into his tale – while maintaining the key elements that keep the story from going too far astray from the actual movie. The game starts out with Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner on an island looking for some pirate’s booty. As the scenes progress, you are ultimately captured and tried for high treason and, of course, piracy. As the noose tightens, the clever and opportunistic pirate starts weaving a tale of how they are innocent and merely bystanders, all in the hopes of delaying the stretch and pulling the angry mob to some compassion.
Off goes Jack Sparrow. In a flashback type setting, you will live and recount the story as he feeds it to the growing interest of the angry mob. Jack, Will, and Elizabeth will go up against lots of cannon and gun wielding pirates, as well as the crew from the Black Pearl – not to mention Captain Barbosa himself. The first few levels, you get your hand held. The areas are very linear with very basic puzzles. Each time something new happens, you will get a pop-up scroll that tells you how to do things or what to look for. While this is going on, you're still taking care of any enemy pirates (Ol' Captain Sparrow counts himself as the hero fighting pirates) with your heavy or light attack. You also have a block button that doubles as an evade move when the button is held down and you tap the direction desired. In addition, you get the ability to lock onto targets and transfer targets, respectively. This helps considerably when faced with many foes and you need to dispatch them quickly. They are rather quick and like to get behind you or face off on your ally.
