Disclaimer: These are impressions from an E3 build and do not reflect what the final game product will resemble. I’m just pointing out what I see.

With E3 underway a lot of the questions we have been asking for the past year are finally being answered. At the top of the list for Sony fans is obviously Killzone 2. Does it deliver on the E3 trailer of last year? Will it become the Halo killer for Sony?

The good people at 1up.com snagged an exclusive preview of the game, where you can find the first screenshots and trailer for Sony’s new flagship title (Sorry MGS4, but you are going multiplatform).

After watching the trailer I am both impressed and worried about Killzone 2. Graphically, it doesn’t match the trailer Sony gave us a year ago, but no one was really expecting this to happen. The game still looks gorgeous though. The amount of detail in the environments comes close if not surpasses Gears of War in some areas. This goes for the Helgast models too, which are looking as menacing as ever.

Even better is the fighting which has become intense, gritty, and incredibly personal. This is still one area even Halo doesn’t seem to get right. I want to feel helpless within an out of control environment of danger and death. From what I’ve seen from the Killzone 2 trailer it is delivering that in spades.

Now to the stuff that worries me. The guns still don’t seem to have a punch. Specifically, enemies aren’t reacting right to the gun fire. This may not be a big deal to some, but remember that the original Killzone also had this disembodied feeling of shooting as well. Fun as hell, but still disembodied. Also even though the death animations are looking very fluid and lifelike, the facial expressions on the human soldiers could use a little more work.

Even with these early thoughts I am stoked for Killzone 2. If it turns out to be anywhere near as good as the original, the PS3 will finally have the exclusive blockbuster it was looking for.

Stay tuned for more E3 07 action right here at VGCore.
