God of War was unquestionably the biggest action game for the PS2 when it hit. Heck, it still provides the best action, pacing, environments, and graphics on the PS2. No game has come close since its release; and in the big pool that is Sony’s first party exclusive titles, God of War is taking up more than its share of the water. To some it is the Halo for the PS2, but that comparison is so hard to argue on so many levels I won’t even try. It's probably better to compare it to the beauty that is Ninja Gaiden. The one part that GoW does have in common with Halo (yet to be even revealed for Ninja Gaiden) is that it can only be outdone by its sequel. And God of War 2 – which is set to hit stores in March – seems more than up to the task.
In fact, the game looks to be one of those action titles that doesn’t exactly revolutionize the formula God of War made work so well, but instead address all the complaints that gamers had with the game to make an overall better product. Didn’t like how Kratos was screwed out of ridding himself of his memories? He’s doing something about that in GoW 2. Sure there is going to be other factors involved (Olympus basically betraying him), but suffice it to say Kratos is doing the one thing no mortal or god has ever done; finding the god’s gods and making them put an end to his nightmares. This journey will not only take Kratos through Athens again, but also Medusa’s Island and the Temple of the Sisters of Fate as well. As you may have hoped, GoW2 is longer than the original (something else fans wanted changed for the sequel).
Trekking through all these hazardous locales will have Kratos running into a good number of new and deadly enemies. Trolls being ridden like horses, skeletons, huge bats, and a three-headed knock off of Cerberus are all new enemies (or new designs of enemies) that Kratos will have to deal with. As a result, Kratos’s combat is getting tweaked. From the looks of it, Kratos’s combat is most simply just a tighter system. This is hard to imagine since the original combat was so damn satisfying. Animations have been changed to seem more deadly and, perhaps in practice, making the attacks more effective. One nice change, though, is the fact that the other weapons in Kratos’s arsenal will be much easier to access and use while in combat. Remember how the magic in GoW always stopped the flow of a combo, or made you vulnerable? GoW2 makes using the magic and other weapons much easier. Beating away at an enemy and then switching over to a magical attack will no longer feel clunky. New combo numbers are now just a few weeks away.
So what new other experiences can we expect from GoW2? Based on the trailers released there looks to be an awesome boss battle with a huge colossus, and based on other reports there will be more bosses along this line. Kratos also seems to start out with the Blades of Athena, but later in game has his old trusty Blades of Chaos back. Anyone else think Kratos is back in league with Ares?
Overall, God of War 2 is going to be the last great PS2 game. After this, all of Sony’s first-party companies will be focusing on the PS3 (we hope). It’s a great way for the PS2 to go out, with one of the best action games of the generation gaining a sequel.
