God of War, when released for the PS2 last year, was the smash hit no one saw coming. It was the rare title that had every component built to near perfection. Whether it was the graphics, music, combat, story or length, God of War was nearly flawless in all areas. Not only did God of War win numerous Game Of The Year awards but it now sits among the elite ranks of Sony’s top franchises. So nothing should excite gamers more to here that Kratos is coming back to the PS2 to lay the smackdown on more of Olympus’s residents. That’s right boys and girls…Kratos is back and he looks as mad as ever.
God of War 2 was announced at the GDC and thanks to a leaked trailer over the internet; some very interesting bits of information have surfaced. Being as this was a quick trailer, the focus was mostly on the combat and less on who our white skinned anti-hero will actually be up against. A few things we do know about the story is that Kratos is still considered the God of War. At the end of the original GOW Kratos was awarded the throne of Ares, the former God of War that Kratos has slain in a frenzied battle for revenge. The trailer quickly recapped this back-story and then quickly jumped into the gameplay portion of the trailer.
Combat wise God of War 2 looks like it will be just as fun and exciting as the original. The trailer featured several clips of Kratos battling enemies, all of which whom he was defeating with brutal efficiency. The weapon of choice for Kratos once again will be the Blades of Chaos. Also to all the fans of the original GOW who were upset that Kratos’s cool red blades were replaced by the whimpy golden ones of Athena need not worry, Kratos is welding a pair of red blades once again. Whether these are Kratos’s original weapons or just Athena’s blades modified really hasn’t been confirmed nor denied. The trailer’s focus on combat was mostly the signature finish moves that made God of War one of the most brutal experiences ever captured in a video game. Kratos was seen holding up a evil dog like creature by the tail and slashing its stomach, holding down an undead solider with his foot and then ripping the solider in two, ripping the eye ball out of the socket from a Cyclops, twisting the head of a Cerberus like dog clean off, and even cutting the wings of a gryphon! Like I said, Kratos hasn’t lost his touch in dealing with his enemies. This game is going to be just as violent as the original.
The other interesting gameplay mechanic that was featured in this trailer was Kratos’s ability to swing. For a few seconds Kratos was shown swinging from point to point using his weapons as his means for transportation. The points for his blade to “catch” were marked by large green glowing orbs. It looked very smooth and second nature.
God of War 2 is coming to the PS2, giving Sony’s slowly dying console some much needed life. Sony is definitely showing its fans that it will not abandon them just because a new console is about to be launched. Kratos will likely spear head this last great surge of games before the PS3 finally comes out. What better way to end a console’s life than with the sequel to one of the best games ever to be crafted? Look for God of War 2 sometime in summer or fall of 2006.
