When games in the Playstation 2 library finally earn the title of “Greatest Hits” and are reduced to twenty dollars it means two things: the game was amazing and definitely moved numerous units when it released, or, it means the game is old and the company is trying to get the attention of those curious gamers who just didn’t feel like laying down fifty bucks for the title. With Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition; neither is the case. Yes the game is old, and yes the game was amazing and moved many copies off the store shelves. But unlike those other games that reach the Greatest Hits bin, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is not only giving more bang for your buck at $20 but also making the entire experience a whole lot better.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition can be thought of as the Ninja Gaiden Black of the Playstation 2. Both games were incredibly hard. Beating either title meant you were dedicated and really had some amazing skills when it came to dealing with enemies that could finish you off in a matter of seconds. But there were some problems with Devil May Cry 3 which made the game aggravating for some players. The game was super hard right out of the box which quickly alienated numerous casual gamers. Also, the system for how your progress was saved was also incredibly unforgiving, resulting in many levels having to be repeated over from the beginning. While these two factors did hurt Devil May Cry 3, the action-packed gameplay easily made up for it and it still scored very high.
But Capcom, being the wise company they are, decided to fix these problems. Wiser still they decided that these fixes would be revealed during the conversion of Devil May Cry 3 into the Greatest Hits category. Now there are several levels of difficulty to choose from. Some of them are much easier while others are so demanding and difficult that one has to wonder how anyone could conquer them. The saving system has also been revamped so that if the player wants to sacrifice some of his golden orbs they can save their progress. But Capcom did not stop there.
In addition to the fixes Capcom decided to make another character playable. That character comes in the form of Virgil. Virgil, for those of you too scared to try Devil May Cry 3 until now, was the main villain from the game. He is Dante’s brother and is just as talented and ruthless. Virgil will not be unlocked right from the start. You’ll have to earn the right to play him by beating the game as Dante first. This isn’t a bad thing, either. Players can get their feet wet as the kick-ass Dante and then take control of his bad brother Virgil. Virgil is going to obviously play different than Dante. Instead of twin pistols Virgil will have a much slower but much stronger ranged attacked that throws blue swords (tip first) at the enemy. The animation is very slick with the swords appearing around Virgil’s body and then whipping towards the enemy to inflict major damage. Virgil will also have the ability to morph into a demon-like Dante but is said to acquire this ability much sooner.
The last piece of new content Capcom decided to add into Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is a mode where gamers can tackle 10,000 waves of enemies. Yeah, let me repeat that…10,000 waves of enemies! Got a spare weekend? How about three? As can be expected, these waves will test every Devil May Cry 3 veteran to their limits. Luckily, a skip option will be available so favorite levels can be replayed again and again.
Seriously, how can you not want this game? For only twenty dollars you get the entire Devil May Cry 3 single player, the ability to play as another character through the entire game, 10,000 waves of enemies to test your skill, easier and harder difficulties, plus a better system for saving your game. Capcom certainly knows how to give back to the fans. No one should be scared to buy this game now. Look for Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition to be released on January 24th, 2006.
